Emergency Medical Technician

Course Overview

The Emergency Medical Technician course is a 6-7 month certificate program  which follows the NTA Regional Operating Standards and provides the EMT student the education necessary to function in an out-of-hospital setting as an Emergency Medical Services professional.

Course Objective

The goals of this program are to help students gain the knowledge, skills and attitude required to become a competent and valuable member of the Emergency Medical Service team.

Course Outcome

Successful candidates will be able to  

  1. Comprehend and evaluate the patient's clinical presentation and determine the appropriate pre-hospital diagnosis
  2. Organise a plan of care consistent with national standards
  3. Identify and perform the skills required for the presenting injury or illness consistent with national standards
  4. Display the kind of professional behavior that is consistent with the expectations of employers and his or her peers

Entry Requirements

Candidates must meet the following requirements

  1. Must be a minimum of 18 years of age
  2. Must be able to read and write
  3. Current first aid certification or 3 CXC O' Levels (General Proficiency). Where this does not exist, the potential candidate must complete our First Aid, CPR & AED course prior to being accepted into the program
  4. Computer literacy skills will be an asset as some work has to be completed online
  5. Must be able to perform duties of an EMT, including lifting & moving patients
